What information have you found useful on this page? What information could we add? What services would you like to know more about?

We aim to please and if there is anything on this page you would like to see improved please get in touch with the web site manager using the link at the base of this page.

If you have any questions about our special needs facilities, please call the railway between 11am and 4pm March through to December and weekends only January and February to find out more on 01594 845840.

Special Needs

We are keen to make all our visitors welcome and make no exception for any one with special needs.

All our stations have access slopes for wheel chair visitors, and our trains carry access ramps and have limited spaces for wheel chairs also. our shop and museum are all easily accessible and the museum while limited in space tries to make as many exhibits accessible as possible.

We do our best to provide smooth paths but you will find some of the ground around the railway and on the footpaths beyond our boundaries is by the very nature of a railway a little uneven in places.

Before you travel, do just check with the station master and guard for help and advice.

Disabled Visitors accompanied by a carer - A discount of £2.00, off either the adult or senior fare, applies to the registered carer on all operating days when standard fares apply. The disabled person will pay the appropriate full fare.

Sights and sounds of the railway

For the visually impaired, it is wise to be accompanied by a sighted guide, to act as eyes over uneven ground. Our staff will escort you to the train and be of any assistance necessary. We take our sight for granted, but to hear the sounds of the steam locomotive, the whistle, the wheels on the tracks, even the sound of a signal arm dropping, can be very atmospheric.

Equally, for the hard of hearing, the railway can be a stimulating place to take in.

Please get in touch...

If you have any special needs that we should be aware of, or wish to come in a group, we strongly advise calling us before you journey to the Dean Forest Railway, so you can find out more about what we can do for you. We are happy to help, but sometimes it is good to know how we can help in advance.

The Dean Forest Railway is run by unpaid volunteers, so you will appreciate that sometimes we might not have suitable staff available to make your day run as smoothly as you, or we would like if we haven't had that little bit of advanced notice.

Wheelchair visitors need not call in advance, (unless you are coming in an organised group), just check with the station master and guard on the day, who will be more than happy to help.

For more information please call the railway between 11am and 4pm March through to December or weekends only January and February on 01594 845840.

Noise and movement

Sometimes the hiss of steam, the shrill of the whistle, or the sheer size of even our small locomotives can be a surprise or worse still distressing for some visitors. We are a fully working railway, with all the noises and sights that go with it. We don't wish to state the obvious but for some this may be the first time they have seen a steam engine. Imagine the excitement that can bring!
